Free drinking water available at the 100 largest train stations

By the end of next year, passengers will be able to fill up their water bottles with filtered tap water for free, at around 100 major stations. This is already possible in six stations, a number set to increase over the coming months. Eventually, with this service offered in 100 stations, 80% of passengers will have access to free drinking water.

The fountains will be located in easily accessible places in the stations. They are already available at Liège-Guillemins, Bruges, Brussels-Luxembourg, Gent-Sint-Pieters, Kortrijk and Ostend stations. Other stations including Charleroi-Central and Ottignies will also follow in the coming weeks.

Each water fountain is also accessible to wheelchair users: a second button has been placed lower down to use the appliance. A recess has been provided at the bottom of the water fountain so that a person in a wheelchair can position themselves easily.

SNCB is working with external Belgian partners to install and maintain the water fountains.

Reducing plastic waste

By allowing passengers to refill their water bottles for free, SNCB is aiming to help reduce plastic waste. This is also in line with SNCB's vision of its rail offering as a sustainable mode of transport par excellence, playing a major role in reducing our country's ecological footprint. Anyone travelling by train produces up to six times less CO2 than in a car.
